About a year ago, my friend Susan gave me a birthday card with a quote by Susan Sontag: “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”. I smiled, at that time still harboring my secret plan of ‘a year off to travel’. She knew me so well, I couldn’t believe her intuition.
As we began to try to get more specific with our plan of “traveling around the world”, I was a bit thwarted to find that, in fact, EVERYWHERE was apparently on our list. We have had so many different itineraries I’ve lost track. At one point, we were going to start out going west, across the Pacific, and ride the Trans-siberian railway. But then the idea of starting with our own country appealed to us…we could work our way across the US before flying out of New York. At one point, we had cut out Europe, because we felt that was so accessible for shorter excursions…but then I waffled….the thought of NOT going to Italy, or Germany or Denmark or Czech Republic was so…. counter-intuitive! When I timidly shared my itinerary with seasoned travelers, we were told we were trying to do too much and we should slow down. This might be ideal for people who get to travel a lot, or repeatedly, but I felt it didn’t apply as neatly to our scenario.
We read tips like: define your “pillars” – the destinations that are highest on your list. With 6 of us, there were many “must-sees” (dozens), and which direction do we go first? We were advised to read up on the seasons, and realized that Chile in May/June might be a little chilly (pun intended). We struggled with how much to book in advance. There were questions about how long could the kids go before they were burned out. When we ‘took a break’ on the road, how long would be enough? Literally, I did not know where to begin. Every time I had decided NOT to go somewhere, an article would show up in my inbox, an enticing piece about that destination; or my husband would email me something from a friend who labeled it favorite trip of all time. All the while, I’m watching the days slip away and July is fast-approaching. I actually resorted to paying people for their opinions. I booked a consultation at Bootsnall, one at Europe through the Back Door, and at Amex. I started meeting with people who had traveled and asking them a million questions. I read so many blogs of RTW travelers, trying to decide if what they did would work for us. Still, in the end, I realized I was just going to have to make a decision and be at peace with it. Maybe we couldn’t go everywhere…..but it would remain on my list.
